Learning Outcome 4

Evaluate systems and technologies relevant to a particular information context.

Knowledge Organization Systems Assignment

This assignment from my LIS 60020 (Information Organization) class exemplifies what I learned, specifically subject headings and the breakdown of Dewey Decimal classifications. The instructions and my answers are included in the document.

In this assignment, I worked with several different organization systems, breaking down the meaning for each. This helped me better understand how the systems worked so I can better use and navigate through them. At the end of the assignment is a brief reflection about how organization under these frameworks is essential to keeping track of and finding information.

Organization is key to making library science work. However, there are many different systems to understand. This assignment highlights the Dewey Decimal Classification, the Library of Congress Subject Headings, and the Art and Architecture Thesaurus systems. Where each is unique in how things are arranged, I have learned to be adaptable so I can navigate through any kind of system or technology.

Catalog Search Analysis

For my LIS 60010 (Information Landscape) class, I was asked to compare and analyze two different catalog search engines. I chose the Salt Lake County Library and the Logan Library to compare. Several aspects were the focus of the analysis, and I included summaries and screenshots to highlight my findings.

This assignment is a great example of my analysis skills in terms of library technologies. A catalog that is easy to use is important to ensure users feel comfortable utilizing the resources provided by the library. My analysis of the two catalogs was meant to find out how easy it was to use each, from a patron's perspective.

In doing this analysis, I gained valuable knowledge about similarities and differences between various catalogs, and was able to find out what aspects are more helpful than others. With this insight, changes could be made to the catalog that would make searching more effective and fruitful, so patrons could get the most out of their library experience.
