Learning Outcome 3
Analyze and engage in the changing cultural, educational, and social roles and responsibilities of librarians/information professionals and the environments they work in within the global society.
Microfilm Digitization Project
In my time working at the Logan Library, I had the chance to participate in a project to digitize microfilm newspapers and documents to make them available and searchable for the public. As an information professional, it is my responsibility to help make information accessible, especially concerning local history.
Along with two others, I was specially trained to use the microfilm scanner, involving light balance and centering. After scanning the film, I was responsible for framing, deleting doubles, and correcting the lighting on individual pages and photographs from the reel for visibility and readability.
Lesson Plan Project
Because librarians must help teach, my LIS 60618 (Information Literacy) class gave me the chance to create and teach a virtual lesson plan. I taught my lesson on determining scholarly sources, and made sure to include engaging elements that would be applicable in a virtual or in-person setting.
This assignment contains two parts; the first identifies the goals and outline for the lesson plan, as well as a script. The second is a PowerPoint presentation that contains visuals that accompany the lesson plan. Included in the lesson are examples of both scholarly and non-scholarly sources.
In any library, it is important to know the social climate and be able to teach patrons what they need to navigate the world. Assuming the perspective of an academic library, I chose to address the inability to determine scholarly sources. After identifying the topic, I researched and wrote my lesson plan, keeping in mind the audience. I figured out a way to engage the audience with interactive examples. Further, I had the opportunity to present my lesson virtually, which gave me a unique experience using technology to teach. This competency is particularly vital with the increase in virtual events due to the 2020 pandemic, but is applicable for public libraries or a highly tech-oriented audience as well.
